Falperra Picnic Area

Since the Middle Ages, the Falperra has been crossed by pilgrims—both during the Santa Marta celebrations in July and throughout the year on the Camino de Santiago. The area holds a significant number of old communal ovens once used by travelers to prepare meals. Although these ovens are no longer in use, Extremo revives that memory with a traditional bread-making workshop, promising to fill the forest once again with a delicious aroma.

Based on the piece Sistema Sonar, installed at the Chapel of Santo António as part of the Extremo festival, this workshop introduces a set of simple and direct operations for musical production and automation, using basic electronic components such as motors and solenoids. These devices are controlled by buttons and switches, and then combined with simple mechanical systems that continuously interact with various sound sources. This workshop is accessible to everyone and is open to all ages—curiosity and imagination are the only requirements.

Extremo takes place in a territory rich in history, with origins dating back to the Bronze Age. Archaeological and architectural traces here tell nearly the entire history of the region—from the Suebi period to the contemporary era, including the Middle Ages. One highlight is the Baroque renovation of the Falperra area, which gave the Chapel of Santa Maria Madalena its current appearance, a work by André Soares. Art historian Eduardo Pires de Oliveira, a leading expert on the Bracaran architect’s work, leads this guided tour through both the iconic and lesser-known landmarks along the border between Braga and Guimarães.
